Woman Convicted In White Plains Road Rampage Case Found Incompetent

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The woman convicted of striking two pedestrians who were walking their dogs in White Plains, killing one of the women, has been found not competent for sentencing, District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced Tuesday.

Sheldene Campbell, 41, struck Roseanne Schiavone on Havilands Drive while driving on the wrong side of the road at a high rate of speed, then Marie Bucci on Baylor Circle around 11 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2008. Both victims were walking their dogs. Schiavone was injured and Bucci was declared dead around 11:30 a.m. at White Plains Hospital. Schiavone's dog's leg was broken in the incident.

Police found her walking in the area of Bryant and South Lexington Avenues. Her car was parked nearby and had clear damage to it.

The defendant is now bedridden and on a feeding tube and trach collar. After she was convicted on all six charges she went on a hunger strike and her condition deteriorated, the District Attorney's office told The Daily Voice.

The court has held bedside hearings that included testimony from two neurologists, three psychologists, hospital nursing staff and correctional personnel. She will now be committed to the custody of the New York State Office of Mental Health for confinement.

She was charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of second-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree attempted assault, one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, all felonies. She was also charged with one count of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

Assistant District Attorneys Christine O’Connor and Kerrie Williams of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
