The city was one of four Platinum Award winners in AAA’s annual Community Traffic Safety Awards luncheon held at The Carltun in East Meadow, N.Y.
The awards recognize outstanding communities for their efforts to make the region’s roadways safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Over the past five years, White Plains has shown a 42 percent reduction in bicycle injuries, a 36 percent reduction in driving while intoxicated crashes and 25 percent reduction in pedestrian injuries at Advance Walk Signal locations.
Successful programs include their Advance Walk Pedestrian Signal Program, DWI Enforcement Program and their Oversized Signs and Trailblazing that make their Central Business District easier to navigate. They also received a Pedestrian Safety Citation for having no pedestrian fatalities in the past 2 years. John Corlett, director of Traffic Safety for AAA New York, presents the Platinum Award for Community Traffic Safety to White Plains.
