White Plains Fire Department Scores Highest Public Protection Rating

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The White Plains Fire Department has again achieved a Class 1 rating for fire protection services from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), according to Fire Chief Richard L. Lyman.

ISO is an independent company that serves fire departments, communities, and other entities by providing information about risk, Lyman said recently.

The top rating, he said, will benefit the community by reducing fire-insurance premiums.

According to ISO, there are currently only 97 fire departments --  out of 48,855 rated departments -- in the country that have earned Class 1 status for public protection. And in New York state, there are only three such departments with an ISO rating of 1.

When determining the rating, ISO looks at things like: emergency dispatching systems, firefighting equipment, staffing, training, location of fire houses, water supply and community risk reduction programs.

Mayor Thomas Roach praised the Fire Department’s “hard work and dedication,” which, he said, “is evident every day.”

“Today, however, those characteristics have been recognized by an independent appraiser and the WPFD has taken its place among the elite fire departments in the state and the country,” Roach added.

Public Safety Commissioner David E. Chong also congratulated Lyman and the Fire Bureau on the achievement.

“I have seen firsthand their outstanding work and commitment to improving the safety of our residents and businesses, as well as the tens of thousands of employees and visitors who come to White Plains every day,” Chong said.

Lyman attributed the rating to the “collaboration and cooperation” of members of the Department of Public Works, Building Department, Fire Bureau, and Public Safety Communications. He also thanked them for their assistance in collecting and preparing the information for the ISO evaluation.
