WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N. Y. -- Westchester County Police reported Thursday that a Brooklyn woman has been charged with falsely reporting an incident following a self-inflicted stabbing in Hastings-on-Hudson in January.
Christine Capurso, 49, of Brooklyn, surrendered on Wednesday, March 26 at county police headquarters to detectives from the Warrant-Fugitive Unit. A warrant had been issued for Capurso’s arrest and Detective Joseph Didona negotiated Capurso’s surrender through her attorney, County Police said in a statement Thursday.
Capurso was arraigned last night in Hastings-on-Hudson village court and released. She is due back in court on April 30.
Capurso claimed she was sexually assaulted and stabbed in a wooded area in Hastings-on-Hudson. She has been charged by Westchester County Police with Falsely Reporting an Incident 3rd Degree, a misdemeanor.
Capurso called 911 on Jan. 16 to report that she had been abducted on Long Island and forced to drive to a wooded area off Farragut Parkway in Hastings where she was sexually assaulted and stabbed. The area is near her ex-husband’s home and she claimed he was one of the assailants.
"The 911 call promoted a large police response to the area by the Westchester County, Hastings-on-Hudson and Greenburgh police departments," County Police spokesperson Kierna O'Leary said in a press release. "In addition to multiple patrol officers and detectives, the county police helicopter and tracking canines were utilized in an effort to locate suspects and the vehicle Capurso described."
The police report said detectives were skeptical of Capurso’s story because of inconsistent information she provided. Doctors at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where Capurso was taken for treatment, also told detectives that they saw indications of a “hesitation” wound – an indication that her injury was self-inflicted.
