"The victim was conscious and alert, thank God,” said Ossining First Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Scarduzio. “The truck rolled over coming northbound down 9A. We’re not sure how it happened, and there’s going to be a heavy investigation.”

It took a couple of hours for first responders to remove the man from the Municipal Waste truck “using heavy extraction” because it had flipped over on its side and creating an entry was difficult, Scarduzio said.

The man was talking when first responders pulled him from the wreckage. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center with what looked to be minor injuries.

The Route 9/9A northbound interchange was closed for a couple of hours to allow emergency vehicles to respond. Traffic was backed up on Route 9 South for at least 1.5 miles and was moving slowly with one lane open at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities estimated it would take several hours to remove the Municipal Waste truck, which spilled tons of garbage into the road and wooded area between routes 9 and 9A.

The Croton Fire Department, Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Westchester County Police, Ossining Police Department and other emergency vehicles were also on the scene and assisted in getting the man out of the truck and to the hospital.
