Unsolved Murder Of Westchester Postal Worker Is Focus Of Television Report

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Over the last few months, "Crime Watch Daily," a television show, worked with Village of Mamaroneck Detective Rich Carroll and the Westchester County District Attorney's office -- gathering information on a "cold case" labeled the Stephen Spina homicide.

Spina, 36, was a Larchmont postal worker found murdered in his Village of Mamaroneck apartment at 300 Richbell Road. The stabbing death occurred on Sept. 17, 2007, between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Det. Carroll told Daily Voice on Friday that he and the village police department received some telephone calls as a result of Wednesday's broadcast.

Time will tell whether fresh tips are promising or yield any new leads, Carroll said.

"We're going to get you at some point,'' Carroll says on the Crime Watch Daily interview. "And it's going to be very satisfying when that day comes."

Police initially suspected that one of Spina's former girlfriends may have been responsible for his murder.

Another "person of interest," a local public works employee, reportedly slashed all four of Spina's car tires about two months before his murder. And Spina's latest, on-again off-again girlfriend Tamara, had a car window smashed, possibly by an ex-lover, Crime Watch Daily reported.

No one has been arrested.

Spina's murder case also has appeared on "America’s Most Wanted,"and kept in the news by his sister, Christine Foley.

A $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest has been funded by an annual July softball game organized by Foley..

In a public email to residents, Village of Mamaroneck officials wrote: "Our hopes are that as the region sees this matter on air it will stimulate this cold case and in turn bring us new leads to follow up on, with the goal that it will lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator."
