Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Charges In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A routine traffic stop for an improper left turn landed two Rye teens in handcuffs after White Plains police found marijuana in their car, according to the police report.

Police stopped a white Land Rover at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday after the 18-year-old driver turned left onto Bank Street from the middle lane of Main Street, which is straight only, police said. As they approached the car, police saw the driver and passenger acting fidgety, according to the report. When the driver put his window down, police detected a strong odor of marijuana, the report says.

When police asked the two if they had any marijuana, they replied that it was in the center console, along with a glass pipe in a blue drawstring bag on the backseat, the report says. The driver added that they took the marijuana out of their pockets and put it in the console while police were approaching the car, the report says.

Police said they found two clear plastic bags with what they believed to be marijuana. The driver told police the medium bag was his and the passenger said the small bag was his. Police also found a glass pipe and a stainless steel grinder used to grind the marijuana.

Both driver and passenger were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. They were both released on their own recognizance with a court date of 9:30 a.m. Aug. 29.
