Officers were called to a home on Fox Island Road around 11:40 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a domestic altercation.

They found the 46-year-old victim, who was bleeding profusely, standing in a hall outside her apartment.

Police said she told them she had been stabbed by her husband, 51-year-old Humberto Chavez, who was still inside the couple's  home.

Police arrested Chavez, who was bleeding from several “self-inflicted wounds,” without further incident.

He was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, and is now receiving medical care in the custody of the Westchester County Department of Corrections.

A bloody box-cutter found at the scene is believed to be the weapon that was used, police said.

The officers acted swiftly to control the woman’s bleeding before Port Chester Rye EMS crews arrived.

Both she and her husband were taken to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla and are expected to survive.

"I have no doubt that the rapid response, and decisive actions taken by responding officers saved the life of this victim," said Port Chester police Chief Richard Conway.
