Police: Hungry Homeless Woman Steals Food From White Plains Store

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A homeless woman was arrested and charged with stealing $54.13 worth of food from ShopRite in the White Plains City Center because “she was hungry,” according to a police report.

Store security told police they recognized her as someone who had shoplifted in the past, but got away. They saw the woman, 46, walk into a woman’s restroom with a black handbag. When she left the restroom, a female associate checked it, and found four empty boxes of vanilla extract in an empty stall, according to the report.

Security approached her outside the store to ask if she took anything. The report says she admitted to taking four bottles of vanilla extract, one super submarine sandwich, one bottle of Hellmann’s mayonnaise and one container of salad.

She told security she took the items because she was hungry, the report says.

Police arrested her Aug. 12 and charged her with petit larceny, a misdemeanor. She was later released on her own recognizance.

White Plains police arrested and charged another man Tuesday with petit larceny for allegedly stealing a flashlight worth $30.88 from Target in the City Center.

Moises Dominquez-Ibarra, 37, was stopped as he left the store by security, who told police he took a Maglite flashlight and didn’t pay for it. He was arrested and released on $500 bail.
