Charges were pending against Barry Wells, 29, who was out on bail after being arrested on a charge of choking his wife, Tonie Wells, in September, according to the report.

Police were dispatched to Tonie Wells' Brooklyn home Wednesday, but “never got out of their patrol car before reporting that the call was unfounded,” the article says.

An hour later, the two officers were called back to the home, where Tonie Wells was found lying unconscious on the floor and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the New York Times.

The officers have been suspended without pay over their handling of the call, according to the New York Times.
