WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Haiku restaurant security told police a man and woman tried to skip out on their bill, then attacked a guard when confronted, according to a police report.
Matthew Williams, 41, of Manhattan had taken off his shirt and was throwing his fists at a security guard at Haiku Lounge & Restaurant, 149 Mamaroneck Ave., Friday night, police said. He was ordered to stop and leave the area, police said, but he continued to try to fight the guard until police physically restrained him.
Police said that when they searched him and removed a pocketknife from his pocket, Williams tried to run away. Police took him to the ground, but he continued to resist and locked his arms close to his chest to avoid being handcuffed, according to the report. After a brief struggle and numerous orders to stop, police got handcuffs on him, and he then began yelling obscenities and made what police called racially charged statements. Police said he was drunk.
While officers waited for a police car to take Williams to headquarters, a New Jersey woman, 28, began talking to Williams and took some items. Police told her she could not take anything from Williams because he was under arrest, which caused her to become irate and yell obscenities, police said.
She told police she was a lawyer and she knew her rights. Police ordered her to leave because she was causing a public inconvenience, but she refused, according to the police report. Police said that when they tried to arrest her for disorderly conduct, a violation, she resisted. Police then forced her hands into handcuffs.
Williams was charged with resisting arrest and theft of service, both misdemeanors; and the New Jersey woman was charged with disorderly conduct, a violation. Both were held for court.
