DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- A former English teacher at Tri-Valley Schools in Sullivan County who taught briefly in Poughkeepsie has been charged with having sex with a student, according to the New York State Police.

Investigators from the Sullivan County Family Violence Response Team and Liberty barracks arrested Jason Horton, 31, of Maybrook, N.Y., charging him with three counts of rape in the third degree, a felony, and one count of third degree criminal sexual act, a felony, said police.

Horton left the Tri-Valley School District in early November and had been employed by the Poughkeepsie City School District until the charges were file, according to police.

Horton was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, according to police.

Horton, while employed as English Teacher at the Tri-Valley School District, is accused of allegedly having sexual contact with a female student, under the age of 17, during school hours, police say.

Horton was arraigned in the Town of Neversink Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail with bail set at $30,000 cash or bond, police say.

The Tri-Valley School District is cooperating fully with this investigation and has informed parents and staff of this arrest, according to police.
