The woman arrived at the station with her unresponsive son around 7:15 p.m., desperate for help, said New Rochelle Fire Chief Louis DiMeglio.
A firefighter took the child and immediately performed CPR on the boy, while other firefighters gave him oxygen, and called an ambulance, and within a minute the boy had regained consciousness, DiMeglio said.
The boy, about a year old, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
"I can't say enough good things about these guys," DiMeglio said. "They are fantastic and last night was an example of the kind of service they offer residents every day."
DiMeglio encourages parents of newborns to take a CPR certification course -- about eight hours -- to learn how to deal with choking and if a child stops breathing.
"Of course, when it's your child in an emergency, it's hard to remember what you learned, you panic," he said. "God Bless this was a wonderful outcome and I'm so proud of the firefighters."
