Sheldene Campbell, 43, has been bedridden and on a feeding tube and trach collar since the incident Oct. 19, 2008. The court has held many bedside hearings and she was sentenced bedside at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility Wednesday.
The defendant had been found not competent for sentencing in late 2011. But, Wednesday, she was found competent for sentencing.
After she was convicted on all six charges in 2011 she went on a hunger strike and her condition deteriorated, the Westchester County District Attorney's office has said.
Around 11 a.m. Oct. 19, 2008, Cambell struck Roseanne Schiavone while driving on the wrong side of the road at a high rate of speed, and then Marie Bucci. Both victims were walking their dogs in White Plains. Schiavone was injured and Bucci was declared dead around 11:30 a.m. at White Plains Hospital. Schiavone's dog's leg was broken in the incident.
Police later found the defendant walking in the area of Bryant and South Lexington avenues, and her damaged car was parked nearby.
The defendant was sentenced to 20 years-to-life on the charge of second-degree murder and 15 years for second-degree attempted murder. She was also convicted on one count of first-degree attempted assault, one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting and one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, all felonies. She was also charged with one count of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
Assistant District Attorneys Christine O’Connor and Kerrie Williams of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
