WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – An elderly woman died Friday in a fire that caused debris to fall on her in a back bedroom, Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said.

The fire started about 11:35 a.m. in the fourth-floor apartment at 135 S. Lexington Ave. Damage from the fire was limited to the one apartment, while the apartments directly above and below received some water and smoke damage. No residents were reported displaced by the fire, Chong said.

The the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The woman was found under a large pile of debris and clothes during a secondary search of the apartment, which Chong said was very cluttered. Firefighters had already put out the fire. The identity of the woman was not released.

Police closed South Lexington Avenue between Quarropas Street and East Post Road during their investigation. The street reopened to traffic a little after 1 p.m.
