WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A bipolar White Plains woman was charged with attacking her boyfriend with a knife after she began hearing voices and then kicking a police officer who was trying to arrest her, according to a police report.
Shaney Finch, 26, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, both felonies, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.
When police arrived at the couple's Wyanoke Street apartment, they were in the dining room, which police said was in “disarray”. The boyfriend was trying to restrain Finch and telling her to drop the knife, according to the report. The boyfriend told officers Finch was trying to stab him and that she had possibly forgotten to take her medication.
Finch has an extensive mental health history with the White Plains Police Department, according to the report.
Before the altercation, Finch told her boyfriend she was hearing voices and became more agitated when he tried to calm her down in their upstairs bedroom, police said. She eventually went downstairs to the kitchen. When her boyfriend followed, she grabbed a plastic-handled kitchen knife and, the report says, lunged at him and tried to stab him in the chest.
The victim told police the knife came down at an angle and bent at the handle when it made contact with his chest. He said he tried to take the knife away and the struggle went into the dining room. He said he was able to restrain Finch and call 911 with a free hand and that Finch dropped the knife, which hit his foot, causing a laceration.
When police told Finch she was being arrested, she resisted and tried to go upstairs, according to the report. When police stopped her, she allegedly became combative and began wringing her arms and screaming. Police took her to the ground to restrain her, the report said, but she turned on her back and kicked one of the officers in the head, causing a contusion and swelling.
Finch was arrested and held for arraignment.
