Dear Editor:

Cardinal Dolan makes no sense whatsoever. He's decided to merge a fiscally solvent church that has it's own priests, the Claretian Missionaries, with a church that is in debt, and allow another church that is also in debt to remain open without merging.

This is not "making all things new," this is trying to resuscitate a dying parish by sucking all the blood out of a healthy one, while allowing an ailing one to continue to suffer without any first aid.

It makes no sense to reward a debtor by taking the hard earned income from a healthy parish, then making the healthy parish subordinate to the debtor. Not only that, but Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church has historical significance in White Plains of serving the marginalized Italian immigrants who founded it, and generations of their children afterwards.

It's a slap in the face to all those hard working Italian forefathers and mothers who sacrificed their resources and talents to leave a magnificent house of worship for their future generations. Merging the parishes and changing the name of it is an insult to this legacy.

Cardinal Dolan played a sly hand in asking the Claretian Missionaries to staff two churches, when they are already to the limits of their commitments with one. The added responsibility may force them to withdraw from our parish, so that he might continue to close our church, as he originally planned.

Furthermore, "Making All Things New" should be focusing on drawing more people to the church through evangelization; as it is, it's driving Catholics away.

Sincerely,

Giovanni Mastracchio
