Warren Braren, Former Head Of Yonkers-Based Consumers Union, 82

NEW MILFORD, CONN. -- Warren H. Braren, who stood up to the tobacco industry in the 1970s, died Thursday, Aug. 13, at his home in New Milford, Conn., The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Braren, who was the former executive of Consumers Union, a Yonkers, N.Y.-based advocacy organization, was 82. Family members told the Times that the cause was a heart attack.

Braren’s whistleblowing efforts spurred a ban on tobacco advertising on television and radio, the Times reported.

Born in New York City to Ralph and Margaret (Hollenbeck) Braren, he was a graduate of New York University, according to the Times.

He is survived by his wife, Bodil (Thomsen), and a brother, Howard.
