WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Thomas E. Burke of White Plains died Tuesday, July 17, from complications related to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He was 66.
Burke was born June 27, 1946, in Lorain, Ohio, to Harriet and Adrian Burke. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and Ohio University. Thomas Burke taught junior high school English in Lorain for four years before earning a master's degree from Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism in Illinois in 1973.
He spent the rest of his career in advertising, beginning at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample. His 23-year tenure there included several years as president of Hudson Street Partners. Burke joined Prudential Financial in 1996 as vice president, where he was in charge of advertising and ran the in-house agency for 13 years.
Burke was a parishioner of St. Bernard's Church for 40 years, serving as a lector, choir member and representative on the finance committee. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Winged Foot Golf Club. Burke loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dona Klekota Burke; a son, Ryan; two daughters, Lindsay (Jon) Ostrom and Kristin (Blake) Gooch; two sisters, Diane Burke and Brenda Weegar; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents.
Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernards Church. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Multidisciplinary Care Center at Columbia University or Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester .
