Tarrytown's Happy Rockefeller, Wife Of Late Nelson Rockefeller, Dies

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Happy Rockefeller, widow of former Vice President and New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, died at her home in Tarrytown on Tuesday. She was 88 and died after a brief illness, according to the New York Times, citing a family spokesperson.

Happy Rockefeller married Nelson Rockefeller, 18 years her senior, in 1963, with both having been divorced. Just over 10 years later, she became Second Lady of the United States when President Gerald Ford appointed Nelson Rockefeller as vice president. Nelson Rockefeller served as vice president from late 1974 to early 1977.

Happy Rockefeller, a native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., had worked in Nelson Rockefeller's office staff from 1958 to 1961.

A breast cancer survivor, she underwent a double mastectomy in 1974.

She is survived by six children.
