Known for his smile and welcoming demeanor,  "Sal Jr.," had been a part of the restaurant known for serving up delicious Sicilian slices and New York-style pies for the past 53 years to Mamaroneck residents and visitors alike.

The news of his passing has sent hundreds of "Sal's Fans" to Facebook to honor the man who welcomed them to his family's restaurant since he was a small child.

Born July 21, 1968, to Salvatore, Sr. and Teresa DeRose (Dattilo), DeRose was part of the fabric of the restaurant that drew long lines of residents to grab a slice. The online condolences seemed to have one theme -- Sal was much loved and always welcoming -- and included words of comfort to his family from everyone from local politicians to local business owners to mom's whose kids have grown up grabbing a slice at Sal's.

In addition to his parents, DeRosa leaves behind his wife Maria DeRose, children Alexandra, Nicole, Salvatore III and Cristina DeRose; brothers, Stephen and Michael DeRose; nephews, Stephen, Jr. and Anthony DeRose, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his sister Marianne DeRose.

To honor DeRosa's life, family and friends will gather from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home, 767 E. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, followed by entombment at Ferncliff Cemetery.
