Peter McHugh, 74, Retired White Plains Teacher

SOMERS, N.Y. – Peter McHugh, 74, died Wednesday, May 20.

He was born May, 26, 1940, in Manhattan, to Anne and Joe McHugh. He graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree, and earned a master’s degree from Harvard University.

He married Eileen Schneiders in 1962.

He worked for 30 years as a seventh-grade social studies teacher in the White Plains Public School District. He loved traveling and discussing world events, and was passionate about helping those in need.

He was a dedicated member of the Catholic Church and spent his retirement volunteering at Teatown Lake Preserve, Stone Barns and Blythedale Children's Hospital.

He is survived by his three children, Karen Sullivan, Matt McHugh and Joe McHugh; his sister, Kate Maria, his brothers, Paul McHugh and Henry McHugh; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at McMahon Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle.
