Mildred Wachtel Balk, 92, Former Teacher, White Plains Resident

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Mildred Wachtel Balk, a former resident of White Plains, died on Oct. 2. She was 92.

Balk was born in the Bronx on Oct. 12, 1920. She graduated valedictorian from Walton High School in 1937 and from Hunter College (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1941. She taught for many years at Mamaroneck and Eastview Elementary Schools in White Plains.  She moved to Minneapolis in 2001 and lived at the Kenwood Retirement Community.

She is survived by sons Jonathan (Linda), Michael, and Brian (Julie), granddaughters Deborah Hansen (Eric), Sarah Balk McGrill, Anneliessa Balk, and Rachel Balk, and great-grandchildren Ethan Hansen, Elena Hansen, and Sophie McGrill. She was predeceased by her husband Milton Balk, brother Allen Wachtel, and parents Edward and Lillian Wachtel. 

Interment is private.  A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held at the  Kenwood on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 2 pm. Memorials preferred to Minnesota Public Radio.
