John W. Beir, 90, Of White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - John W “Jack” Beir, a resident of White Plains, died March 5. He was 90.

Beir was born June 23, 1923, in New York City, to Mildred Beir and William Sondheimer. He attended boarding school and military school before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II as a tank commander and assisted in the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. After marriage he settled with his wife in Scarsdale where they raised their family. He had a career in the men’s clothing business as Vice President of Sales for The Grief Companies. Following his retirement moved to White Plains. He volunteered at White Plains Hospital for many years and attended history classes at SUNY Purchase. He was a member of Quaker Ridge Golf Club for 56 years.

Beir is survived by his wife, Ellen Beir of White Plains; children, Linda Goslin (Chuck) of Brewster, Jeffrey Beir (Sarah) of Winchester, Mass., Rachel and Stephen Beir (Jewel) of Glen Allen, Va.; six grandchildren; step-sons, Jamie Haupt of Colo., Michael Haupt of N.J., and Peter Haupt of Md., and their families; brother-in-law, Richard J Katz (Peggy) of Jupiter, Fla.; many nieces, nephews; and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Barbara Landauer; brother, Fred Beir of Los Angeles, Calif.; and niece, Amanda Tate of West Hollywood, Calif.

A private service was held. A memorial celebration of Beir’s life will be held in June, details to follow.
