STONY POINT, N.Y. - John F. Hughes, a resident of Stony Point for 46 years, died Friday, June 27. He was 77.
Hughes was born March 3, 1937, in the Bronx, to James and Mary (Creegan) Hughes. He was a graduate of Rockland Community College, Suffern and he attended the New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a Korean War Veteran. He was also a master sergeant in the Air National Guard at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh. Also, he served in the Air National Guard at Westchester County Airport in White Plains. He also served in the Army National Guard. He retired as a third grade detective from the NYPD Manhattan Homicide Squad in 1982 after 20 years of service. He also worked in security for Consumers Union in Yonkers.
He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), Detectives' Endowment Association (DEA), Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), Rockland County Shields, Marine Corps League, Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) and the American Legion.
Hughes is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Hughes Gizzi (Mark); sons, John, James, Joseph (Jennifer) Hughes; and daughters-in-law, Patricia and Michele; eight grandchildren; sister-in-law, Diane Giattino (James); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Ann; parents; sister, Mary "Helen" Noone (James); brother, James Hughes (Kathleen); and nephews, James and Kevin Noone.
Calling hours are Wednesday, July 2 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2 at St. Margaret's Church, Pearl River. Burial to follow at Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery, New Hempstead.
