WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Geraldine A. Thompson New, formerly of White Plains, died peacefully Jan. 7 at Danbury Hospital. She was 82.
New was born June 28, 1930, in New York City to Gerald Thompson and Hazel Thomas Thompson. She graduated from Isaac Young High School in New Rochelle. She moved to White Plains, where she and her husband, James W. New, raised six children.
New worked for the White Plains Board of Education and upon her retirement, she and her husband retired to Kent, Conn., in 1991. She taught CCD at Sacred Heart Church in Kent and volunteered at New Milford Hospital and the Kent Community Thrift Store.
She enjoyed art, quilting, painting and gardening and was an avid reader. She was a fan of the New York Giants and UCONN women's basketball team.
New is survived by three sons, James W. (Luann) New, of White Plains; Gerald T. (Tricia) New, of Brewster, N.Y.; and William J. New, of New Fairfield; two daughters, Mary K. (Irwin) Stockel, of White Plains; and Veronica A. (Neil) Rehders, of Sherman, Conn.; a son-in-law, John Varachi, of North Salem; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James W. New; and a daughter, Eileen P. Varachi.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford, Conn. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church in Kent. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
