George Derderian, 80, Former Resident Of White Plains, Assessor

SAN JOSE, Calif. - George Derderian of San Jose, formerly of White Plains, N.Y., died Nov. 25. He was 80.

Derderian was born Jan. 7, 1934, in Boston, to George and Agnes (Day). He grew up in Milton, Mass. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he attended Rollins College in Florida. After college, he relocated to New York. He  completed the Master Appraisal Institute's program for valuing property both commercial and private, and became only the fifth Master Appraiser in New York. He was appointed by the Mayor as the assessor of White Plains in 1964, a position he held for more than 15 years. He also held this title in the Town of Mamaroneck. He began his own appraisal business out of White Plains. After his retirement, he relocated to San Jose, with his wife, Debbie.

Derderian is survived by his children, George of Northbridge, Mass., Michael (Cathy) of Pepperell, Mass., Darren (Michele) of Greenville, R.I., Scott of San Jose, Frank Whetzel of San Jose, and Simon (Ellen) Whetzel of Cupertino; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Debbie.

Services are being handled by the Spangler Mortuary, Los Altos, Dec. 2 and 3.
