WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Gabriel Dominick Ruta, a White Plains native, died Oct. 26. He was 79.
Born March 20, 1933, in White Plains, he was the son of Pasquale and Jennie Carlucci Ruta. He graduated from White Plains High School in 1952 and served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Ruta briefly attended Harvard Divinity School and SUNY Geneseo Teachers College. In the early 1950s, he worked for the American Felt Company in Glenville, Conn. He married Eleanor Mary Ferris on May 11, 1957. They had three daughters and lived in Rye for more than 30 years.
He worked at the White Plains Post Office and retired as the personnel director. Ruta relocated to Danbury, Conn., before recently moving to the Andover, Conn., area. He enjoyed good food, wine, music and reading.
Ruta is survived by three daughters, Sally Ann Ruta, of Prospect, Conn., Therese "Terry" (Joseph) Landerfin, of Coventry, Conn., with whom he lived, and Alexandria "Allie" (Damon) Sandlock, of Cos Cob, Conn.; a brother, Louis Ruta, of Lake George, N.Y.; a sister, Cecelia Salvati, of White Plains; three grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife in 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel . A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bridget Church in Manchester, Conn. Graveside services will be held at 12:15 p.m. at St. Peter's Cemetery in Danbury. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel.
