Berra's death was announced separately by the Yankees and Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Little Falls, N.J.

Berra, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972 was a three-time Most Valuable Player and a nationally recognized figure who transcended sports.

A colorful character, he was known for his charming humor, making such humorous "misstatements" as "When you get to a fork in the road, take it," and, when discussing the setting sun at left field in Yankee Stadium, "It gets late early out there."
