Austin N. And Gloria V. Avery, Both 86, Former White Plains Residents

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Austin N. and Gloria V. Avery, formerly of White Plains, died Oct. 1 and 19 respectively. They were both 86.

Austin was born May 14, 1928, in the Bronx, to Hazel and James Avery. He was a brother to James, Joan, Ruth and Gordon Avery. He was a Major Crimes Detective for the White Plains Police Force and upon his retirement spent his time writing novels based on the cases he worked on as a detective.

Gloria was born July 7, 1928, in New Rochelle, to Josephine and Christopher Cullen. She was a sister to William, W. Patrick, and Mary Cullen. Austin and Gloria both graduated from Pelham High School. Austin also served in the U.S. Navy. Gloria worked for a phone company before her marriage and then raised their four children. When her youngest entered school, she became a real estate agent in White Plains.

They are survived by their children, Thomas Avery (JoAnn), Christopher Avery (Maureen), Kathleen Benziger (Robert), and James Avery (Marylou); and 16 grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Christopher Benziger, their grandson, to Becoming Independent, 1425 Corporate Center Parkway, Santa Rosa, California 95401.
