Who Is The Youth Of The Year In White Plains?

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Do you know a graduating high school senior from White Plains who has made a difference in the city? Now is the time to nominate him or her for the Youth of the Year Award.

The award, given each year by the city’s Youth Bureau, recognizes volunteer service and community involvement, such as tutoring, helping the elderly, conducting food and clothing drives, fundraising for charitable programs, organizing community events, mentoring, and coaching, according to a release by the city.

The 2011 Youth of the Year Award went to Ricardo Martinez , who had amassed more than 300 hours of community service while volunteering with the ACE after-school tutoring program at the Youth Bureau. He also assisted with a Saturday chess and homework academy for youths at Eastview Middle School, and presided over the White Plains High School’s Midnight Run Club, which provides food and clothing to homeless people in New York City.

Public and private school students are eligible, but nominees must be residents of White Plains. Nominations are due by Oct. 15. The nomination form may be picked up at the Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place, or downloaded below.

The award will be presented at the Common Council meeting Nov. 5.
