WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- If you know a high school student who is interested in community service or local politics, White Plains may have the perfect extracurricular activity.

The White Plains Mayor's Youth Council isaccepting applications for 2013. The Youth Council meets on a bi-weekly basis to discuss leadership, community service ideas, and ways to improve White Plains.

All White Plains high school-age students are eligible, and upon acceptance are given the opportunity to meet regularly with Mayor Thomas Roach to discuss city needs and function as a sounding board for him and his ideas.

Additionally, members attend several conferences, including the New York State Youth Bureau Leadership Conference in Albany, and League of Women Voters conferences to learn about the importance of lobbying.

According to spokeswoman and Youth Services aide Catherine Backes, the members gain a lot of different community service opportunities and experiences.

Backes told The Daily Voice , "Every year the council does a Thanksgiving food drive that feeds over 80 families, a toy drive for Christmas, an intergenerational Valentine's Day celebration at the senior center and they also hold tons of fundraisers for walks for things like breast cancer and Alzheimers."

The council was founded in 1988, and applicants are accepted based on interest alone. There are currently   20 members on the council.

"The most important things they do, in my opinion, are the drives. We get a lot of donations from city employees, school district members and local White Plains families. It's nice because it seems like the whole community comes together to help the community, for the community."

Applications for the council can be accessed online here , or picked up at the White Plains Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place.
