WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The local chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) recently celebrated the success of its 2012 Light the Night walks, one of which was held at the Westchester County Center and raised $604,000 to help fund blood cancer research, education and patient services.

The Westchester/Hudson Valley chapter, based in White Plains, announced it raised a total of $850,000 in 2012 at an awards reception where the top Light the Night fundraising teams, sponsors and local blood cancer patients were honored. The other two events were held in Rockland and Orange counties and raised $160,000 and $86,000 respectively.

Each year, friends, families and co-workers in more than 200 communities across North America form teams to walk or help by donating at retail outlets in support of blood cancer research. Despite advances in medical research, leukemia kills more children under the age of 20 than any other cancer. Someone is diagnosed every four minutes, and someone dies from blood cancer every 10 minutes, according to the LLS.

During the White Plains walk in November, participants did a lap for a select few local survivors: Sabrina Marciante, a South Salem resident with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and Court Ingraham, a Mahopac resident who survived non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Both were honored at the event, and again at the awards reception held in February at the Double Tree in Tarrytown.
