WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – There are approximately 70 streets still blocked in White Plains as the city waits for Con Edison crews to de-energize downed power lines. The work is imperative to ensure it is safe for Department of Public Works crews to clear any downed trees, the city announced.

The DPW has cleared all trees that don’t also involve downed wires.

The Con Edison outage map shows approximately 8,966 customers were still without power as of 5 p.m. Thursday. While those residents wait for their power to be restored, the city is offering hot lunches at the Thomas H. Slater Center on 65 Mitchell Place and hot showers at four other community centers .

It has also extended hours at the White Plains Library this weekend. The library will be open until 9 p.m. Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The city’s emergency shelter has been moved from Post Road School to the Community Center at 65 Mitchell Place, allowing the school to be a polling location for Election Day, which is Tuesday. There will be meals served by the Salvation Army, along with cots and blankets, at the new location.

For residents looking for dry ice, Con Edison will be distributing it Thursday at 200 Business Park Drive in Armonk (across from IBM), and Yonkers Raceway, 810 Yonkers Ave. in Yonkers.

For parents looking for family-friendly activities this weekend, the Ebersole Ice Rink at 30 Lake St. will have public session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. There will be more public sessions from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday.

This weekend, Ebersole will be open for the regular public session schedule.
