White Plains Reptile Show Features Boas, Lizards

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The New York Metro Reptile Expo, an event held at the Westchester County Center in White Plains Sunday, featured 80 vendors at 200 tables who sold a variety of exotic reptiles and related products, from cages to heating and lighting equipment.

The event, which has been held since 1997, was attended by about 6,000 people.

The show was sponsored by Animal Encounters, a Putnam Valley, N.Y. company.

Chad James, a vendor from Dillsburg, Pa. was selling a variety of ball pythons that ranged in price from $25 for the Captain Hatch to $1,300 for the Lesser Ghost. The prices are based on the recessive traits in each snake, he said.

Debbie Treat and her daughter, from South Salem, purchased an albino corn snake and a tiny bearded dragon lizard. "I love bearded dragons," her daughter said. "They're fun to hold and easy to take care of."

Treat said the snake is for her son and her children are "big animal lovers." She said the reptiles will be fed crickets and lettuce.

Another attendee, Davy Haimowitz, purchased a Columbian red tail boa, a 6 foot long snake that was carefully packed in a plastic bag and container for the trip home. "I had a snake for 15 years, but it passed away," he said. He attended the reptile show, "because you can't buy them in stores."

Haimowitz said he enjoys snakes as pets because "they don't make any noise and they eat once a week." He said his new pet boa will double in size.
