White Plains Opens Shelter for Residents

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --  White Plains Mayor Tom Roach announced the city will open a shelter for residents and ordered restaurants, bars and theaters to close by 9 p.m. Saturday in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

The city also altered parking regulations, banning on-street parking from midnight Saturday through 7 a.m. Monday.

Free parking will be available in the following parking structures effective immediately through Monday at 7 am: Chester-Maple Garage, Hamilton-Main Garage, Longview Avenue Garage and Lexington-Grove Garage at the Galleria.The emergency shelter will be opened at 7 a.m. at Post Road Elementary School, 175 West Post Rd. Any resident needing shelter before 7 a.m. on Sunday is asked call the White Plains Department of Public Safety at (914) 422-6111.

The mayor declared a state of emergency effective at 9 p.m. Friday. The city has set up a dedicated phone line that will provide recorded announcements and updates during the storm. The hotline number is (914) 422-5150. Residents and businesses are encouraged to check the City’s website, www.cityofwhiteplains.com, for updates and announcements.
