WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The city of White Plains is urging residents to clean out their closets and donate their gently used shoes to a citywide shoe recycling effort as part of the City’s celebration of Earth Day.
This month-long green effort is kicking off today, St. Patrick’s Day, and will culminate at the City’s Annual Sustain White Plains event Saturday, April 26 (more details to come on this great family event).
This is the second year the city will undertake the shoe collection and recycling drive. The city has once again partnered with Soles for Souls ( www.soles4souls.org ) on this initiative.
Collection boxes are conveniently set up in these city buildings for drop off during regular business hours:
• City Hall: 255 Main St. • Library: 100 Martine Ave. • Youth Bureau: 11 Amherst Place • Gillie Recreation Center: 11 Gedney Way • Ebersole Skating Rink: 110 Lake St.
In addition, the White Plains School District is again partnering with the City to aid in the recycling efforts. Families with children in the public schools will also be able to drop off shoes at the Soles for Souls drop boxes in each school building.
Shoes will be sorted over the weekend of April 26 and 27 Ebersole Ice Rink. Shoes will continue to be collected at Ebersole until they are counted and shipped.
Spring is coming; so clean out those closets and do something for the environment at the same time. There will be an Earth Day celebration April 26, from 12 to 4 p.m., in downtown White Plains. The event will include the unveiling of a work by international 3D Chalk Artist Anthony Cappetto that captures the essence of sustainability, a free film screening of DisneyNature’s Bears at City Center for 400 moviegoers, interactive vendors, exciting entertainment, great food and more.
