WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --  White Plains Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center were approved for a partnership by the Public Health and Health Planning Council on Thursday.

Through the partnership, approved by a unanimous vote, Montefiore will become the co-operator and active parent of White Plains Hospital. President and CEO of Montefiore Health System Dr. Steven M. Safyer said this will make White Plains Hospital its regional hub.

White Plains Hospital has about 2,000 employees, making it one of Westchester's largest employers.

“The relationship we are embarking on with Montefiore will be a partnership designed with many benefits to both sides,” Jon B. Schandler, C.E.O. of White Plains Hospital, said. “We will continue to treat patients close to home in a setting where physicians, nurses and staff consider them to be family.

"White Plains Hospital will continue to provide exceptional care for our community and with Montefiore as our partner, we are well positioned to provide advanced community based health care well into the future.”

The merger also includes a White Plains Hospital clinic in Armonk, a physical therapy and occupational therapy center in White Plains; the hospital's Women's Imaging Center; White Plains Hospital Imaging in New Rochelle and a psychiatric outpatient clinic and continuing day treatment program at the hospital.

Danbury Hospital and Norwalk Hospital merged in January 2014, and other health systems aren't far behind. Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco and Phelps Memorial in Sleepy Hollow are both exploring a possible merger with North Shore-LIJ Health System in Long Island.

“Working with the private-practice physician community and other providers, Montefiore and White Plains Hospital will offer Westchester residents a well-coordinated system of care and the benefits of Montefiore’s innovative, integrated care delivery system and academic partnership with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine," Safyer said.
