WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- White Plains Hospital is one of the first medical centers in the region to adopt revolutionary 3-D mammography.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found 3-D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, to be more effective in detecting invasive cancers, reducing false findings — and the call-backs to women for more imaging.

White Plains Hospital uses the technology at three of its Women's Imaging Centers in Rye Brook, New Rochelle and at the main hospital in White Plains.

According to Dr. Caren Greenstein, director of women's imaging at White Plains Hospital, the images produced by 3-D scans are more nuanced and give a sharper picture of any tumors that might not be noticeable on standard images.

"This is definitely going to become the new standard of women's breast health care," said Greenstein. "And we are the only health system that offers it in three locations — making it more convenient and less crowded at each of our sites, where we can also perform all follow-up care, including biopsies. We are advising most women to have 3-D mammograms, particularly those with dense breast tissue, because we're able to detect more breast cancers, and in particular, the most invasive breast cancers."
