The city got the garage from the Esplande Assisted Care Facility in March at no cost. It will give Esplande use of 160 parking spaces in the new garage and Esplande will pay a pro rata share of operating costs. This leaves 459 spaces available to the public, which the city said in its release will support the workforce, shoppers and diners.

"The garage had fallen into a state of disrepair and closed to the public.," according to the statement. "The loss of this parking has been severely disruptive to local businesses in the Post Road Corridor."

Demolition of the existing structure will take 10 weeks and construction of the new garage will begin immediately afterward. The new eight-story structure is expected to open in early 2014.

Waller Avenue between East Post Road and Lyon Place has been closed for more than a month. It will re-open in both directions after demolition is complete. Lyon Place will be closed during the demolition, except for local access. It will remain closed for most of the construction.

More streets may need to be closed traffic patterns changed during construction.
