WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. A 2-kilometer walk is set for Saturday morning beginning at the Eastview Middle School track to promote "Healthy Living, Healthy Lifestyles," Wayne Bass, commissioner of the White Plains Parks and Recreation Department, said.
This is the second of four walks in 2012 organized by the White Plains Juneteenth Heritage Committee, which made "Healthy Living, Healthy Lifestyles" its yearlong theme.
"Its attempting to encourage people to change their habits and increase the amount of exercise they get and to eat healthy," Bass said.
The first 2-kilometer walk was held June 9 as part of the city's annual Juneteenth Festival. Two more are scheduled for Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, Bass said. Saturday, registration for the walk begins at 8:45 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Eastview Middle School track, 350 Main St.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The White Plains Juneteenth Committee organizes the city's annual celebration.
