What's Happening in White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Here's a look at what's happening in White Plains this week:

Monday 

- Dick's Sporting Goods will open at 6 a.m. to help Giants fans restock with Big Blue gear if the Giants win the Super Bowl.

- Parents of children who will be entering kindergarten next September are invited to tour George Washington Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. and Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Children are not permitted to attend tours, which will last between an hour and an hour and a half.

- The Common Council will meet in City Hall at 7:30 p.m. The council will host a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the zoning code that would allow Doris Sassower to operate a bed and breakfast in her Soundview Avenue home. Council members will also vote on authorizing $162,000 in bonds to finance a remodeling project at the library, extending the surcharge taxi drivers now charge through next year, and raising fees for youth bureau and recreation and parks department programs. The Salvation Army's expansion plan will also be discussed. The full agenda is available online.

- The Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Education House. The board anticipates holding an executive session.

At the library: 

- Children with caregivers are invited to a "Happy Valentine's Day" Mother Goose story time. Tickets will be given out a half an hour prior to the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. readings.

- Adults speaking English as a second language are welcome to converse in English from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

- The library is seeking advice from teens on what programs, books, movies, and music they'd like to see at the library. Pizza and snacks will be served during the 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. gathering. 

- The library will host a program where local will read writing from the Veterans Writing Project. "Afterwords: From War and Home" will be held in Room A from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday 

- Parents of children who will be entering kindergarten next September are invited to tour Post Road and Ridgeway elementary schools at 9:15 a.m. and Church Street Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Children are not permitted to attend tours, which will last between an hour and an hour and a half. 

- Our Lady of Sorrows Parish School will hold its annual academic fair from 8:10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. More than 50 student projects will inform viewers about thunder and lightning, the Titanic before it sank, sign language, the history of Grand Central Station, and more. 

At the library:

- A basic computer class in Spanish will be held from 10:15 a.m. 11:30 a.m.

- Parents of two and three-year-olds are invited to attend a "Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Train" story time with their children. Tickets will be given out a half an hour before the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. readings.

Wednesday

- The library board of trustees will convene from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the library's board room.

- The White Plains Cable Access Television Commission will meet at 11 Midland Ave. at 7:30 p.m.

At the library:

- Four and five-year-olds may attend a "Be My Valentine" story time and craft project in The Trove. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before the 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. events begin.

- The library will host a macrame jewelry craft session for teens from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

- Families are welcome at a "Valentine's Day Fun" story time. Tickets will be given out a half an hour prior to the 7 p.m. reading.

- A Google 101 search engine course will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Thursday

- Parents of children who will be entering kindergarten next September are invited to tour Church Street Elementary School at 9 a.m. and Post Road Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Children are not permitted to attend tours, which will last between an hour and an hour and a half.

At the library:

- White Plains parents and their 13 to 36-month-olds are invited to socialize with their peers. Experts are available to informally discuss nutrition, speech, and other child development topics. Pre-registration is required. Please call (914) 422-1476 for more information.

- A course on how to use a mouse and a Windows course for adults will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

- Adults speaking English as a second language are invited to converse from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

- Caretakers and children three or older are invited to a Silly Singalong and Story from 2 to 3 p.m.

- The library will host a Valentine's day story time, related craft, and cookie snack for kindergartners through second graders. Tickets for the program will be given out 30 minutes before the 4:30 p.m. program.

Friday

- Parents of children who will be entering kindergarten next September are invited to tour Ridgeway Elementary School at 9:15 a.m. Children are not permitted to attend tours, which will last between an hour and an hour and a half.

- The youth bureau will hold a Black History Month event at 86 Dekalb Ave. from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

- The Westchester Express, a premiere mite ice hockey team, will be competing against the Greenwich Skate Club in the first annual mite winter classic game at 6:20 p.m. Fans are invited to watch the young athletes at 9 Cardinal Rd in Greenwich, Conn.  

At the library:

- Children between 20 and 29 months-old are invited to attend a "My Love For You" story time with adults. Tickets will be given out a half an hour before the 1 p.m. activity begins.
