What's Happening Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A special Common Council meeting, an energy panel and a WEDC luncheon featuring MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski are among the events happening around White Plains this week.

Monday, June 11

Web Browser Basics: 10:15 a.m.-11:45 a.m. The White Plains Library will hold a class for people comfortable using the mouse who are ready to begin exploring the Internet. Students will learn the basics of the Mozilla Firefox web browser, including toolbar buttons, using links and finding information on a web page. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Common Council Special Meeting: 7:30 p.m. The city’s Common Council will seek to declare itself lead agency for the environmental review of the construction of a building within the Winbrook Community at 223-225 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. It will also hear from the commissioner of planning and environmental officer on the French-American School of New York’s application for a special permit to use the old Ridgeway Country Club as a school. The city has completed its review of FASNY’s draft environmental impact statement and determined it isn't complete. This will require the private school to address the deficiencies cited in the city's completeness review before the application can go to public review.

Board of Education Meeting: 7:45 p.m. A reception will be held for 25-year and retiring staff as well as administrative appointments to tenure. Education House, 5 Homeside Lane. 

Tuesday, June 12

Clases De Computadoras: 10:15-11:30 a.m. The library offers Spanish-speakers a class to learn the basics of using a computer. White Plains Public Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, June 13

White Plains Farmers Market: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The market is on Court Street between Martine Avenue and Main Street, and will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21.

Library Board of Trustees Meeting: 7 p.m.-9 p.m. The White Plains Library’s Board of Trustees will hold a meeting in the board room. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Google 101: 10:15 a.m.-11:45 a.m. Learn the basics of web searching with the popular search engine Google. 

Thursday, June 14

World Coal Association Energy Panel: 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. A panel featuring energy experts, advocates and government officials will address the policy and politics surrounding New York’s energy outlook. Panelists will tackle topics including system sustainability, hydro-fracking, long-term planning, nuclear energy and environmental impact.

Stanley Schear Leadership Award Presentation: 9 a.m. The award, administered by Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc., honors advocates, such as the late Stanley Schear, for affordable housing.

WEDC Luncheon: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC's “Morning Joe,” will speak about how women can achieve their deserved recognition and financial worth at the Annual Spring Luncheon and Marketplace, to benefit the Women’s Enterprise Development Center (WEDC), at the Tappan Hill Mansion, 81 Highland Lane, Tarrytown.

BOCES Graduation: 5 p.m. Graduating seniors participating in BOCES will have their ceremony at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Ave.
