What's Happening Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A math adventure at the library, a Common Council meeting and a computer skills workshop are just a few of the events going on in White Plains this week.

Dream Big Math Adventures: 4:30 to 5 p.m. Celebrate the TROVE summer theme of "Dream Big" with its Monday afternoon series of fun activities for second- through sixth-graders. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

TROVE @ the Movies: 7 to 8:45 p.m. The TROVE Summer Film Festival continues this week with "Happy Feet 2." The 99-minute film is rated PG for some rude humor and mild peril. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Common Council Meeting: 7:30 p.m. The Common Council will schedule a public hearing for Sept. 4 on an application by Sunrise Detox for a special permit to open a new location on 37 DeKalb Ave., the former site of Nathan Miller Nursing.

Tuesday, Aug. 7

Cyber Security Workshop: 11 a.m. Are you concerned about protecting your privacy online? The Digital Arts Experience staff will hold a free workshop covering safe Internet usage, privacy protection and a number of other topics that will teach you how to protect yourself, your company and your family. 6-5-4 Let's Explore: 4:30 to 5 p.m. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades can put their personal touch on two unique art projects. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, Aug. 8

Stories & Stuff - "Join the Circus": 10:30 to 11 a.m. Preschool story time, including a craft activity, for ages 4 and 5. Literacy connections are made at "Stories & Stuff" where stories are centered around a theme and children listen and interact with corresponding rhymes, songs and finger plays. A final craft project ties in with the topic fostering a sense that stories are imaginative, yet lasting. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Foreign Film Festival: 2 to 4 p.m. "The Human Resources Manager" is a tragi-comedy centered on the HR manager of Israel’s largest industrial bakery, who sets out to save the reputation of his business and prevent the publication of a defamatory article. The 103-minute film made in 2010 is directed by Eran Riklis and is in Hebrew, Romanian, French and English with subtitles. It will be screened again at 7 to 9 p.m. at the White Plain Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Pajamarama - "Night Owls": 7 to 7:30 p.m. Wear your pajamas and bring a stuffed animal friend for stories, songs, activities and a bedtime snack. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Thursday, Aug. 9

Mouse and Window Skills: 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. Learn how to use the mouse, including point and click, pull-down menus, and scroll bars. Students will also learn basic Windows functions such as opening and closing programs, minimize/maximize, and how to start a computer session at the Library. Crafts for Teens - Spa Time: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Make scented soaps and bath bombs at the White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.
