What's Happening Around White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A magic show, a children's concert and a youth basketball camp are among the events happening around White Plains this week.

Monday, June 25

Westchester Summer Music Center : 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Music Camp for students entering grades three through 12 (Please note that the Westchester Summer Music Center will be closed on Wednesday, July 4). Slam Dunk Basketball Camp : A weekly basketball camp run by the Westchester County Department of Parks begins Monday. Grades 1 and 2 run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and grades 3-9 run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no camp the week of July 4. Camp resumes July 9 and continues through July 27. Trove @ The Movies : 7 to 8:45 p.m. This week, the White Plains children's room, known as The Trove, continues its Summer Film Festival with "Adventures of Tintin." The animated film is based on the popular graphic novels by Herge. The 107-minute film is rated PG for some action violence, drunkenness and brief smoking. All Summer Film Festival movies are shown again Fridays at 3 p.m. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

"Dream Big" Magic Show : 2 to 3 p.m. Jim Vagias will perform magic using the summer reading theme of "Dream Big," sprinkled with children's books and reading tips. There will be time for audience participation. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

"Dream Big" Children's Concert : 2 to 3 p.m. Join award-winning singer-songwriter Patricia Shih for her interactive "Dream Big" children's concert. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Wednesday, June 27

White Plains Farmers Market : 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21. The market is on Court Street between Martine Avenue and Main Street.

Book Bunch : 2 to 3 p.m. Join The White Plains Library's children's room, known as The Trove, for its third and fourth-grade book discussion group, which will be reading "Calvin Coconut: Dog Heaven" by Graham Salisbury. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling (914) 422-1476. Talk about the book with other kids over pizza at Uno Chicago Grill, 14 Martine Ave.

Web Browser Basics : 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. A class designed for people who are comfortable using the mouse and are ready to begin exploring the Internet. Students will learn the basics of the Mozilla Firefox web browser, including toolbar buttons, using links, and finding information on a web page. Pre-registration is required and can be done in-person at the reference desk or by phone at (914) 422-1480. White Plains Library, 100 Martine Ave.

Book Bunch : 2 to 3 p.m. Join The White Plains Library's children's room, known as The Trove, for its fifth and sixth-grade book discussion group, which will be reading "Weasel" by Cynthia DeFelice. Pre-registration is required and can be done by visiting The Trove. Once registered, you will receive a free copy of "Weasel." Talk about the book with other kids over pizza at Uno Chicago Grill, 14 Martine Ave.

Storybook Art : 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children in grades 1-5 will be introduced to new art mediums by focusing on a picture book and the techniques its artist employs, and then creating their own projects.
