Williams, a Democrat representing District 8 and a member of the Westchester County Board of Health, said in a press release that current health commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler’s salary of $172,295 is more than sufficient.
“At a recent county Board of Health meeting, there were impassioned pleas from board and staff members for an increase in the health commissioner’s annual salary,” Williams said.
“The argument was made that an increase would better reflect the commissioner’s current workload, which, it was felt, has been made greater with the Ebola virus scare, as well as by the possibility of other public health emergencies.”
Williams emphasized that her issue is not with Amler’s work, but the amount of money allocated to a single county employee.
“Many county employees are earning under $50,000 a year — and have not had a wage increase in the last four-plus years,” Williams said.
“A full salary review for commissioners and deputy commissioners has long been wanting. Choosing to bestow raises on select administrators, in light of tight budgeting, smacks of favoritism.”
District 8, which Williams represents, covers parts of White Plains, Greenburgh, Elmsford, Sleepy Hollow, and Tarrytown.
