WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. Westchester Countys trout fishing season begins Sunday with newly stocked waters waiting for anglers to visit for the traditional kickoff.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has some tips and reminders for anglers in every region, including local rivers and reservoirs.
Trout, lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon seasons all begin April 1, with best early-season fishing in the lower Hudson Valley.
According to the DEC, prime areas to fish are those that warm the earliest, including tributary mouths and areas along the shoreline and surface of lakes and ponds. Anglers are advised to fish deep and slow with bait or weighted nymphs and streamers. The unseasonably warm weather should make early-season fishing productive.
DEC's stocking of catchable-size trout began in late March and is ongoing through early April in the lower Hudson Valley. The DEC planned to stock nearly 2 million catchable-size brook, brown and rainbow trout in more than 300 lakes and ponds and roughly 2,990 miles of streams across the state.
The following Westchester waters have been stocked:
Somers: Amawalk Inlet, Amawalk Outlet and Amawalk Reservoir and Muscoot Reservoir (1,900 brown and rainbow trout).
Bedford: Cross River Reservoir and Reservoir Outlet, Stone Hill River and the Mianus River (more than 7,000 brown trout and rainbow trout).
Cortandt: Croton River (1,200 rainbow and brown trout).
Harrison: Kensico Reservoir (9,000 brown trout).
Cortlandt: Peekskill Hollow Brook (1,400 brown trout).
Mount Pleasant: Pocantico River (600 brown trout).
North Salem: Titicus Reservoir (7,500 rainbow) and Titicus River (600 brown).
Licenses
Anglers ages 16 and older must have a New York State fishing license, available on the DEC website, by calling 1-86-NY-DECALS or by purchasing one from the 1,500 license-issuing agents.
