Westchester County 'Flushes' Out Website Glitch

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A Google search for "Westchester County Government" usually yields links to the homepage, the Bee-Line bus timetables and maps. But during the last few days it also turned up links for Viagra and Cialis.

These search results, the county said, are effects from when the website was hacked on March 30, an incident which forced the county to take down its website and have it restored. The county's information technology department resolved the issue, officials said, but some spam has resulted here and there as carryovers from that incident.

The county noted the incident Monday, and a search of "Westchester County Government" continued to display Viagra and Cialis as subcategories under the link to the Westchester County government homepage Tuesday morning. By the afternoon, it had been corrected.

Diana Costello, of the Westchester County communications department, said the county website has approximately 70,000 pages, and its IT department has been combing them to fix any glitches. The county also requested that Google "flush their cache" to remove any spam from a Google search of the website.
