The program, produced by The Volunteer Center of United Way, aims to prepare passionate, knowledgeable individuals in the business and nonprofit sectors to assume positions of influence and leadership.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity,” Marissa Brett, the association's executive director of economic development, said in a prepared statement. “We consider this the professional development experience of a young professional’s lifetime.”
Leadership Westchester aims to provide leading-edge thinking and techniques that are used at the nation’s top business schools for managing others and achieving successful outcomes. All aspects of leadership are presented in a process of discussion, self-inquiry and cooperative work during an eight-month period (Oct. 22 through June 10).
Each Leadership Westchester class size is small – no more than 20 – and includes a mix of individuals from business, the public sector and nonprofit organizations. Throughout the year, various topics that apply to both the business and nonprofit sectors are covered. These include, in the business sector, building an individual model for effective leadership; strengthening interpersonal and communication skills; learning to have grace under pressure; overcoming resistance to change; motivating others; and creating compelling messages. For those in the nonprofit sector, topics include understanding key responsibilities of board membership and contribution; lobbying others on important issues; governance, strategic planning, advocacy and management.
