The store, which plans to build on the Platinum Mile in Harrison, is a 20-acre space now filled by several vacant office buildings at 106, 108 and 110 Corporate Park Drive.

If the required special exceptions and building plans are approved, Wegmans plans to demolish the underutilized office buildings on the property, and construct a new, attractive two-story grocery store with amenities, including a café, store officials said.

In addition, there would be ample parking with 736 parking spaces provided, along with upgrades in landscaping, lighting, stormwater management improvements, signage and other site improvements.

In its proposal to the city, Wegman said that Harrison was "an ideal location for the development."

To receive approval, the proposed building would require a special exception use and site plan approval, as well as slope permit approval because a stand-alone store is not currently a permitted use in the area.

Store officials have filed a zoning amendment petition with the Town Board requesting that a new special exception use be added.

According to their website, the chain of grocery stores were founded in 1916 and employs more than 47,000 people.

Its stores are laid out like European open-air markets with fresh breads, imported cheeses and fresh produce on display.

Its larger stores offer 50,000 to 70,000 products, compared to an average of about 40,000 in most supermarkets, it says. Of those products, 3,000 are certified organic.

It sells restaurant quality sushi, soups, entrees, appetizers and side dishes.

There is also a sandwich shop, salad bar, bakery, pizza station, pharmacy, florists and a place to buy housewares and seasonal merchandise, too.
